Frozen Soil Tunnel on Qinghai-Tibet Railway

Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's longest plateau railway, is also the world’s longest railway built in frozen soil areas, covering two 3024-meter frozen soil tunnels, i.e. the Kunlunshan Tunnel and the Fenghuoshan Tunnel. As for this project, 100,000 railway builders have created one miracle after another in the snow-covered plateau through 5 years of efforts and successfully resolved three worldwide problems in railway construction, including alpine and hypoxia conditions, frozen soil and fragile ecology.

The research achievements on Qinghai-Tibet Railway project won the Grand Prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress in 2008; the research topic of “Key Technologies for Frozen Soil Tunnels on Qinghai-Tibet Railway” participated by China Railway Southwest Research Institute (SWRI)won the 2nd Prize of Science and Technology Award of China Railway Society in 2007; the research project of “Monitoring Technique for Freeze-Thaw Circle around Frozen Soil Tunnels on Qinghai-Tibet Railway” led by SWRI won the 2nd Prize of Science and Technology Award of China Railway Engineering Corporation in 2006 and the 3rd Prize of Science and Technology Award of China Railway Society in 2007; the research project of “Study on Water Leakage Treatment of Frozen Soil Tunnels on Plateau” led by SWRI won the 2nd Prize of Science and Technology Award of China Railway Engineering Corporation in 2006; the research project of “ Experimental Study on Blasting Technology for Frozen Soil Tunnels on Qinghai-Tibet Railway” participated by SWRI won the 3rd Prize for Science and Technology Award of China Railway Society in 2007.
