Qingsha Mountain Slope Treatment for Ping'an-Adai Highway in Qinghai

Ping’an-Adai Highway is the main access to south Gansu and Sichuan from the southeast of Qinghai, with a total length of 41km.

 And the Qingshashan section has the characteristics of high altitude, complex geological conditions and frequent disasters. Its exposed stratum is mainly composed by Quaternary Holocene slope deposit, devonian conglomerate, cretaceous conglomerate and fault breccia, with a certain angle to the highway alignment. Thus, during its construction, due to the faults passed through and induced developed joint fissures as well as the poor bedrock lithology, collapse and deformation of high slope often occurred, which affected the construction and operation of this highway.

On the basis of detailed geological survey, China Railway Northwest Research Institute (NWRI) has comprehensively analyzed the inherent mechanism of slope deformation, found out its causes and reinforced nearly 10 slopes with anti-slide pile, anchored frame with prestressed cable, foundation beam with prestressed anchor cable, solid retaining wall, acclivitous drainage hole, intercepting and drainage ditch, etc.

Since the operation on the National Day of 2006, Ping’an-Adai Highway has experienced years of heavy rain, freeze thrawing, etc. with no deformation at all, showing that its treatment goal is achieved.
