Landslide Treatment for Jietai Temple in Beijing

Beijing Jietai temple is a famous Buddhist temple in China. As a national cultural relics protection unit, it was built in first year of Sui Dynasty, dating back the history of more than 1400 years ago. The ordination altar in temple holds the first place in three major altars around China, which can grant Buddhism the highest commandment, the Bodhisattva Precepts, therefore it is known as "the first altar under heaven". Many old and valuable trees have been planted in temple, 88 of which are protected at national level. Since Ming and Qing dynasties, "ten amazing pines" have been known in the world.

The temple is located at north foot of scenic Ma'anshan mountain and at backside of north-south ridge of mountain. A heavy rain fall on July 20, 2004 caused the ridge sliding, forming nearly tens of millions of cubic meters of large complex landslide with the north-south length of about 1200m, the average width of 450m, the edge height difference of about 230m and the depth of slip surface 47m, which pose a deadly threat to Monastic buildings and old trees.

This landslide in temple was large scale and complex, with features of multi-strand, multi-level and multi-layer and high cost for treatment. CRAC experts proposed the principle and general idea of " Firstly protect temple, Secondly remain stability, Finally permanently cure, Treatment by stages and in batches" according to the cause of landslide. The project took three years and nearly one hundred million Yuan, eventually the temple landslide was stabilized, the temple and its surroundings were carefully protected.

In the process of treatment against temple landslide, CRAC initiated the technology of anti-slide pile with multi anchoring points to successfully overcome the difficulties encountered in treating temple landslide such as sliding surfaces, thicker sliding mass and larger thrust, etc.; it was the first time to set the water-collecting hole at the bottom of pile to solve the landslide-induced flooding problem; developed the anchor dust collector to protect the environment in scenic area and during pile well and anchor construction; the stress adjustable anchor cable was first used to solve the pre-stress loss problem on anchor in different periods or on different structures; in order to solve the geological environmental hazards at the mined-off area, the underground supporting column technology was developed. According to the result of sci-tech novelty retrieval, the comprehensive treatment technology for landslide in Jietai Temple has reached the international advanced level.
