Rectification of No.3 Residential Building in Qinghai Normal University

The No.3 residential building in Qinghai Normal University is of frame-shear wall structure, covering 30 floors on ground and 1 basement, with total height of 97m and weight of about 300000kN. In September, 2007, the building started to tilt and the building northward dipping was up to 254mm in April, 2008, with tilting rate of 2.66‰ and a tendency of progressive deterioration. The No.3 building in Normal University is multi-layered, with higher center of gravity and deep foundation, and no similar project reference is available. Therefore, the rectification work is unprecedentedly difficult.

Commissioned by the Qinghai Normal University, CRAC quickly dispatched the capable technical forces to rush to the site. Through investigation and analysis of the building and its surroundings, and referring to the relevant technical data, the reason for the tilt of building was determined. According to actual conditions in site, the comprehensive rectification and reinforcement proposal of "preloading + horizontally digging in shaft + rectification with stress adjustable anchor cables + tilting prevention with steel pipes at northeast corner " was presented. 3 months later, the project achieved a complete success, the tilting rate of the building dropped to 0.87‰, being far less than the allowed parameter of 2.5‰ in the relevant national specifications. Thus, the huge economic losses for dismantling of the tilted building are not only restored and also the adverse social impacts are avoided.

During rectification of No.3 building in Qinghai Normal University, CRAC creatively applied the anchor cable technology in rectification control and positioning & anchoring of the tilted building, and developed the new technology of "radial horizontal digging and rectification with pre-stressed anchor cables ", which can improve the rectification control, reduce the risks, improve efficiency of rectification and achieve cost saving. By sci-tech novelty retrieval, the rectification of No.3 building in Qinghai Normal University set new double records in two aspects of height and floors of tilted building both at home and abroad and its technical contents reach the domestic advanced level.
