Guangzhou Xinguang Bridge

Xinguang expressway in Guangzhou is located between Haizhu District and Qiaozhen town, has functions of both urban expressway and arterial traffic. Xinguang bridge,  crossing main channel of the Pearl river, has a continuous span combination of (3 × 50) m + (177 + 428 + 177) m + (3 × 50) m, of which the approach bridge is pre-stressed continuous box girder of 3 × 50m and the main bridge is three-span continuous rigid frame bridge of 177m + 428m + 177m, with total bridge length of 1082m.  

The three continuous arches of main bridge under construction is a three-span simply-supported tie bar steel arch bridge supported by a triangle steel frame, and the finished bridge is a three-span continuous steel frame arch bridge (tops of both side piers are movable support along the direction of bridge, two triangular steel frames are just like steel frame piers consolidated with the upper tie bar arch). Xinguang bridge is a large three-span continuous steel truss tied arch bridge with a number of technical issues and large construction difficulties.   .       

Major innovations and technological breakthroughs were achieved in three-span continuous rigid frame arch bridge architecture considering the main span of 428m, lifting method for rib installation, the idea to simply-supported before continuous structure and so on, taking great records both at home and abroad. As for Xinguang bridge it has pioneered to combine the traditional arch bridge with V-shaped rigid frame bridge and initiated the structural system of "three-span flying-swallow type steel box truss and parallel tied arch".

Awards: the 8th Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize of China Civil Engineering; The Luban Prize for Construction Project in 2008.
