Landslide Treatment along Amaoyakou-Heitushan Section on Xining-Jiuzhi Highway

Xining-Jiuzhi Highway is an important inter-provincial arterial highway in Qinghai and is essential for the socio-economic development and social stability of Tibetan region in the southeast of Qinghai. However, due to the poor geological conditions and formidable natural conditions, geological disasters like landslide, etc. often occurred along the line. Since 2005, influenced by the rainfall, road reconstruction and expansion, etc, the Amaoyakou-Heitushan section has experienced large numbers of disasters, such as landslide reactivation and deformation, high slope diseases, etc., which have seriously affected the highway construction and operation. Due to various factors like limited funds, etc, no defect investigation has been done along the line and treatment was not carried out until the concentrated outbreak of disasters. Thus, the treatment was divided into four phases from 2005 to 2012.

Commissioned by Qinghai Highway Construction Authority, NWRI rapidly sent technical experts to the site for survey and design. Based on the detailed geological survey and annotation,  NWRI had determined the property, scale and cause of defects, and then provided the construction drawings through design, comparison and optimization of treatment schemes, review and evaluation of experts from the Communications Department and repeat modification. Specifically, the comprehensive treatment for the disasters like landslide and so on was carried out by using the retaining measures like anti-slide piles, anchor frames, retaining walls, etc., the groundwater drainage and ground surface interception measures like sewer, blind ditch, sump, inclined drain hole, etc., and the slope surface protection measures combined of backfilling with flexible support, which ensured the reconstruction, expansion and temporary operation of this highway, and also guaranteed its subgrade stability and traffic safety in the normal operation stage.

The project won the 3rd Prize of Outstanding Engineering Survey and Design Award of CREC and the 1st Prize of Outstanding Engineering Survey and Design Award of NWRI. And the research topic of “Prevention and Control for Large Landslide and High Slope Diseases along Highway under Extreme Conditions of Qinghai Plateau”, completed by NWRI associated with Southwest Jiaotong University, focusing on the landslide mechanism of large red-mudstone layer and the new micro-pile  retaining structure along Xining-Jiuzhi Highway, won the 2nd Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Qinghai Province in 2009.
