Survey and Design for Sleb Ri Necropolis in Nyingchi, Tibet

Sleb Ri Necropolis, located at the southern foot of Lielangla Mountain, about 600m northeast of Lie Villege, Jindong Township, Nang County, is 3km away from the Jindong Township Government in the east, 15 km away from the Dongga Town Government in the southwest, 100m east-west of the country road leading to the outside and about 3 km away from the provincial road 306 in the west. As for Sleb Ri Necropolis, 184 earth-covered tombs, 28 pits for sacrificial horses, 1 site of historic house and 2 sacrificial relics have been found at present, covering over 800,000 m2 which are regarded as the ancient tombs and ruins of Tibetan dynasty. Sleb Ri Necropolis has a long history and unique architectural form, which is the largest ancient tombs of Tibetan dynasty in Tibet and has a great value to the study of tomb history, its architectural style, artistic characteristics, etc. In 1996, Sleb Ri Necropolis was listed in the third batch of cultural relics protection units by the People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region. And in 2001, it was listed in the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.

For over 1000 years, influenced by the natural and artificial destructions, Sleb Ri Necropolis has been severely damaged, of which most tombs were robbed, some tombs’ walls collapsed, diseases were seriously developed and the whole necropolis was under condition of poor preservation. Survey results show that the major diseases are erosion, perforation, gully erosion and artificial destruction mainly induced by its inherent factors like features of local soil, architectural form and construction characteristics of tomb, etc. and external factors like rain erosion, underground capillary water damage, temperature damage, biological damage, artificial destruction, etc. And with the further development of all these diseases, more serious impacts will have on the ruins. In light of the poor preservation and the serious diseases, the cultural relics value and its long-term preservation are seriously affected, which needs scientific and effective measures for maintenance and protection. Besides, the serious problems of Sleb Ri Necropolis also have attached great attention of national and local cultural relics departments. During the 12th five-year-plan period, the state has invested RMB 22 million Yuan for Sleb Ri Necropolis disease treatment.

Commissioned by the Nyingchi Cultural Relics Bureau, NWRI has undertaken the preparation of the rehabilitation scheme for the phase 1 works of Sleb Ri Necropolis disease treatment project.
